Meekhof Tire Sales and Service, Inc. - Weathering the Storm
It started as a typical spring day in Gaylord, Michigan, with calm, but overcast skies. Inside Meekhof Tire Sales and Service, Inc., the team worked on client vehicles, handling everything from oil changes to tire installations. Then, the weather turned violent.
In the Blink of an Eye
For Matt Hadley, a longtime Gaylord resident and manager at Meekhof Tire, the shift from routine to emergency happened instantly. “The weather changed in the blink of an eye,” Matt said. “The sound of the tornado was unlike anything I’d ever heard. It all happened so fast, there wasn’t even time to think or react.” Despite the shock, Matt sprang into action. He ushered customers and employees away from the windows, battling fierce winds to secure the front doors.
“It only lasted seconds, but it felt like forever,” he recalled. “You’re just caught in it, waiting for it to end, but it feels like it never will.” When the winds died down, the scope of the damage became clear. The storm had battered the shop’s exterior, shattering windows and scattering debris. Fallen structures had crushed or displaced vehicles in the lot. Inside, people were shaken, but immediately began to pull together.
From Humble Beginnings
For Calvin “Butch” Meekhof, the second-generation owner of the business, the news was heartbreaking. His late father founded the company in 1971, building a reputation for quality service. Together, they expanded from humble beginnings to 14 locations across Michigan and Illinois.
“When we first started, it was just my dad and I,” Butch said. He credits those early years working side-by-side with his father for the family-oriented culture that defines the business today. That culture fosters deep loyalty, reflected in employees who have stayed with the team for decades.
People First
This close-knit culture proved vital when disaster struck. When Butch received the news from his shaken team in Gaylord, his first thought wasn't about the inventory or the buildings. “The first thing that went through my mind after the tornado leveled Gaylord was, ‘Is everyone safe?’ Buildings can be rebuilt, but lives can’t be replaced,” Butch said.
Only after confirming his team's safety did the reality of the business situation settle in. He had to evaluate if they could stay in business and keep operations running. Two of the site's buildings faced severe destruction. The storm completely flattened one and tore the roof off another before setting it back down. Fortunately, a third building sustained minimal impact. This allowed the team to resume operations quickly, protecting the livelihoods of the Gaylord employees and supporting the surrounding community.
A Partner in Recovery
While the team handled the immediate aftermath on the ground, Butch focused on the recovery process. He contacted Miles Smith, his marketing representative at Federated Insurance®. Miles initiated the claims process right away and maintained constant communication. A direct claims representative began working on the case that same day, ensuring a thorough on-site assessment.
“Being able to rely on Federated® is very important to me because when an emergency happens, you don’t always think of all the details,” noted Butch. The insurer’s team arrived on-site immediately and remained involved throughout the recovery. “Federated went above and beyond after the tornado,” he said. “Knowing we had a partner who truly cared about our business and our people gave us peace of mind.” Through quick thinking, a strong company culture, and reliable partners, Meekhof Tire Sales and Service, Inc. turned a day of destruction into a story of resilience.
