All Seasons Automotive, LLC - Passing the Torch

Preserving a Legacy for the Next Generation

The shop inside All Seasons Automotive, LLC in North Liberty, Iowa, is always filled with activity. Technicians work quickly and skillfully in each bay, showing their expertise. At the center of it all, founder Jim Neff and his son, current owner Justin Neff, work side by side.

With just days left before stepping down after 42 years as a mechanic, Jim reflected on the early days of the business. All Seasons Automotive has been a pillar in the community for more than two decades, providing quality auto repair and maintenance to local and regional customers.

Humble Beginnings, Big Dreams

Jim launched the business while still holding down a full-time job at a dealership. He spent his evenings and weekends fixing neighbors’ cars to earn extra money. “I was so busy; I had more cars to work on than I had time to fix,” Jim recalled. Today, with four lifts and a team of seven, the shop has never been busier. As the business continued to thrive, discussions about its future and a leadership transition became more important.

A Son Steps Up to the Challenge

A few years ago, Justin began taking on more responsibilities while balancing the needs of his growing family. Seeing the potential for the shop and his own future, he approached Jim about stepping into ownership. He was determined to shape his own path.

“I’m either going to start my own thing or get out of the industry completely,” Justin said. “I was already taking over more of the day-to-day operations, so it just made sense,” he added. “We had some tough but good conversations to figure it all out.”

Navigating the Road to Succession

The Neffs had the vision and determination to secure the future of All Seasons Automotive. However, they needed guidance to turn their ideas into actionable steps. That’s where Antwain Strong, their Federated Insurance® marketing representative, became a trusted partner. “My role wasn’t just about providing insurance,” Antwain explained. “It was about helping them understand their company’s value, asking the right questions, helping them plan for the unknowns, and ensuring their business and family’s legacy were protected.”

Navigating a business transition is anything but simple. For Jim and Justin, the process brought as many questions as it did opportunities. Antwain initiated key discussions on business succession planning. He provided a clear roadmap and helped facilitate a comprehensive business valuation to determine the company’s worth.

One critical step they took was completing a Buy-Sell Agreement. This vital tool formalized the transition plan and helped protect the business from unforeseen changes. The agreement was properly funded through life and disability income insurance products Antwain facilitated.

Antwain also connected the Neffs with an independent attorney from Federated's network to formalize contracts, ensuring every detail was in place to safeguard their legacy. “Antwain and Federated® helped us see the true value of our business. Their guidance and support were key. We couldn’t have managed this transition without them,” said Justin gratefully.

The Next Chapter for All Seasons Automotive

Jim reflected on the process with mixed emotions. Walking through the bustling shop and watching Justin lead with energy and confidence, he feels both pride in seeing his son succeed and the weight of letting go.

“I’m not sure I’m completely ready,” Jim admitted, his voice tinged with emotion. “But I know Justin is, and I couldn’t be happier or prouder. Handing over something I’ve worked so hard to build feels odd, but I know the shop is in good hands.” Though bittersweet, Jim knows the transition is not an end. It is a continuation of the values and trust that have cemented All Seasons Automotive as a community staple for years to come.
