Hurricane Preparedness

The safety of you, your business, your employees, and their families is a top priority at Federated Insurance. Here is a sample checklist to assist with your efforts.

Prepare to Evacuate

  • Be prepared to evacuate and do so immediately when asked.
  • Know your route, your destination, and make sure you have a full tank of fuel in your vehicle. Stay in contact with someone outside the hazard area.

Prepare Outside Surroundings

  • Secure weak or loose items and materials.
  • Trim trees and shrubs away from structures and remove any weak tree sections at risk of falling onto structures.

Protect Windows and Doors

  • Close all interior doors, in addition to all windows and exterior doors.
  • If you have shutters, monitor weather conditions to ensure you have enough time to deploy them before the storm hits your area.
  • Check doors, windows, and walls for openings where water can get in. Use silicone caulk to seal any cracks, gaps, or holes — especially around openings where cables and pipes enter the property.

Reduce Water Damage Risks

  • Move furniture and electronic devices off the floor, particularly in basements and first floor levels.
  • Remove area rugs from floors so they will not get wet and grow mold or mildew, especially if the property will be unattended for an extended period and/or if long-term power outages are a possibility.
  • Have back up power such as batteries or a generator for storm water sump pumps.
  • Shut off electricity and gas at the service entrance if the utilities could be interrupted or submerged.

Recovery

  • Listen to the Emergency Alert System for updated information. Do not reenter the area until it is declared safe.
  • Restore utilities and notice if there is a gas smell or electrical problem.
  • If you use a generator, follow proper directions for use and never use a generator indoors.
  • Check on your neighbors.
  • Make a list of damages to facilitate insurance claims processing.
