Accurate business processing is essential to Federated’s success. Federated has a variety of business processing roles throughout the company.

The business processing role that is associated with an established Career Path is the Underwriting Support Specialist (USS) position. A USS works with multiple computer systems to perform mission-critical tasks, such as setting up new client accounts, assisting clients in making changes to their policies, and creating insurance policies. A USS handles various state-specific insurance requirements and manages a variety of tasks and issues to help serve our clients.

Characteristics of a Successful Underwriting Support Specialist

  • Does not need an insurance background, but must be willing to commit to continuous learning.
  • Has experience in business, accounting, office support, or a related field, or 2 years post-secondary education in these fields.
  • Are proven problem solvers who take initiative.
  • Have an eye for detail and strong decision-making skills.
  • Possess strong computer skills (preferably Microsoft Office experience).


Underwriting Support Specialists receive extensive classroom and on-the-job training. The initial training takes place in an on-site classroom and lasts 4 months. Additional training takes place for another 4-6 months as you adapt to the USS role.
