Federated DriveSAFE Privacy Policy

Federated Mutual Insurance Company, and our affiliates and subsidiaries (referred to in this Policy as “Federated” or “We” or “Us”) make available to eligible clients and their employees (“You”) the Federated DriveSAFE telematics mobile application (the “Application”), a hardware telematics tag which will be affixed to a company vehicle (“Tag”), and a Fleet Portal which contains the telematics analytics in connection with the telematics program (“Portal”) (collectively, “Services”).  Federated is dedicated to safeguarding the privacy of the users of such Services.  This Policy describes the information we collect about You and how it is used and protected.  This Policy applies to any user who downloads and activates the Application, uses the Portal, or otherwise participates in the Services as part of his/her employer’s participation in the Services with Federated.   The Application wirelessly connects to a Tag that your employer places in company vehicles. The Services collect and use your driving data to assist your employer in risk managing your driving behavior and encourages and supports safer driving behaviors while driving a company vehicle.  Your decision to participate in the Services is voluntary.  If you choose not to participate, do not download the Application or otherwise use the Services.  By downloading and activating the Application or otherwise using the Services, you are consenting to the provisions of this Telematics Privacy Policy (“Privacy Policy”).  For clarity, this Privacy Policy applies only to the Services.   

What Information Do We Collect?

When you download and activate the Application or Otherwise Use the Services We May collect the following information:

Personal Data, including:

  • Name, e-mail address, IP address, photo (optional),
  • Your status as an employee of your employer,
  • Information regarding your phone, including make, model, operating system and capabilities, and
  • Any other information You manually provide during registration

When You use the Application We Collect the Following Information

NOTE:  We only collect driving information when your phone is connected to a Tag installed in your employer’s vehicle and You are driving that “tagged” company vehicle.  We do not collect any driving information when You are driving your personal vehicle or any other non-work vehicle.

  • Telematics and Geolocation data, while driving a tagged work vehicle, including:
    • GPS location services data when the Application is connected to a Tag, date and beginning and ending time of each trip.
    • vehicle speed, acceleration data, gyroscope data, barometer data, magnetometer data, to identify instances of speeding, hard breaking, hard acceleration, hard cornering, total distance driven per trip,
    • Phone state information (e.g., user activity data (Android), motion and fitness data (Apple), screen on/off, device lock/unlock, texting, placing or receiving a call in a non-hands free manner, other use). 
  • Connectivity Data
    • Information regarding the Tag’s Bluetooth connection to the Application,
    • General data about the number of nearby Bluetooth devices detected by your mobile device

NOTE:  The Application, when connected to the Tag, collects location data described above to enable the Services, even when closed or not in use. We do not collect any data regarding the specific contents of your use of the phone.  For example we do not access or collect the text message, phone calls/recordings, internet browser data, other application data, etc….  Only that the phone was used, other than hands-free, in some manner during driving.  Some limited non-trip data may be collected, such as Application settings when the Application is opened by End User, in order to create messaging for End Users to fix their settings and to help troubleshoot scenarios that an End User isn't able to record  

Data collected may be in an identified or de-identified format.

How Do We Use the Information collected through the Services?

We use your information, including Personal Data, Telematics and Geolocation data, and Connectivity Data in order to:

  • Administer the Services.
  • Assist us in creating and developing safe driving programs for You and your employer.
  • Track your driving behaviors over time, identify potentially hazardous driving behaviors, and report your progress to You and your employer via the Application and Portal.
  • Confirm your identity and to assist You by providing customer and technical support regarding the Application or Portal when You call Us to report a problem.
  • Detect potential security issues and to protect against fraud or illegal activity.

Do We Share Your Information?

  • We do not sell your Information to anyone.
  • We do not share your Personal Data with any 3rd party for marketing purposes.
  • We share your driving trends and trip details with You, via the Application.
  • We share your driving trends and work vehicle location with your employer via the Portal.
  • We share your overall driving score, team rank, user name, score, driving mile ranges, recent achievements, uploaded photo (optional) within the Application with your coworkers who are on the same “team.”
  • We share your information within Federated in order to administer, service and support the telematics program, Services, providing You with insurance products and services, providing You and your employer with risk management services, servicing your policies and/or claims, in the ordinary course of Federated’s business operations including, but not limited to, evaluating, administering, and resolving a claim, protecting the rights, privacy, and safety or property of Federated or others, permitting Federated to pursue available remedies or limit the damages that we may sustain, and for other legitimate and lawful business purposes. 
  • We may share your information with service providers and other entities as allowed or required by law or written contracts. 
  • We may share your information to comply with regulatory and law enforcement authorities and to respond to subpoenas, court orders or as otherwise permitted or required by law. 

Do Not Track Signals

Currently, neither the Services nor Federated’s websites support or respond to “do not track” signals or other mechanisms that provide You the ability to exercise choice regarding the collection of information about your use of the Services or Federated’s websites.

The Services may provide You with links to third party websites. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third party websites. Review the privacy policies of those third party websites carefully. 

Children Under 13 Years of Age

The Services are not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect or maintain personal information from children under the age of 13 via the Services.

Changes to This Notice

Changes to this Notice will be posted here.  You can review this notice at any time by going into your Application on your phone and clicking Privacy Policy (https://www.federatedinsurance.com/drivesafe/privacy-policy). Within the DriveSAFE application, navigate to More > FAQs > Privacy.
