Claims representatives work closely with clients, physicians, attorneys, contractors, auto body repair operations, and others. They are trained to be prompt, fair, and courteous in handling claims.
Claims representatives need knowledge and skills in these areas:
Coverage – clear understanding of coverage that applies to specific loss situations and the ability to explain coverage to clients
Investigation – innovation and prompt attention to determine coverage, facts, damages, and recovery possibilities
Evaluation – fairness and integrity based on coverage, liability, damages, and medical necessity, according to state laws and jurisdictions
Negotiation – ethics and integrity, and detailed knowledge of issues
Resolution – objectivity and sensitivity to settle, deny, defend, compromise, or recover, based on the facts and coverage that apply
Successful claims professionals:

Are strong communicators and have the ability to build effective working relationships
Have strong analytical and decision-making skills

Understand insurance policies, laws, medical outcomes, and property repair issues

Federated helps provide knowledge and experience for new claims representatives through classroom work, discussion of policies and procedures, and on-the-job training. Claims representatives are encouraged to continue self-development through self-study courses and achieving professional designations such as Associate in Claims (AIC) and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).
